We hear the terms functional foods and super foods quite often. Are super foods functional foods? Are functional foods super foods? How do we identify them when grocery shopping and what makes them super foods and functional foods? Let us answer these questions today!
There is a classification of foods called functional foods. They can be enhanced or fortified foods, which have added vitamins, minerals, or other healthful properties. They are added to foods so the foods work even better in our bodies, allowing other nutrients to be absorbed and used at a higher functioning rate. Functional foods also can naturally have compounds in them which work beyond the vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols to enhance our health. These naturally found healthy foods which go above and beyond the regular component health are called super foods. These go above and beyond meeting our nutritional needs but without added “stuff” made by the manufacturer or farmer. Super foods can help prevent diseases when part of a healthy lifestyle.
Some examples of functional foods:
- Omega-3 enriched eggs
- Calcium fortified orange juice
- B-12 enriched breads
- Folate added to breads, cereals, etc
- Vitamin A and D added to milk
- farmers working on hybridization of the highest values of vitamins in fruits and vegetables to be combined or enhanced
Some examples of super foods:
- Blueberries
- Grapes
- Pomegranates
- Garlic
- Green tea
- Oats
- Broccoli
- Onion
- Tomatoes
- Cacao
- Pumpkin
- Acai berries
- Kale
- Cherries
- Seaweed
- Flaxseed
I hope this has helped you understand the difference and the life enhancing properties of both functional foods and super foods. They do a body good! I want to hear from you!
Blessings,
