Gifts for Gardeners

Niki Irving (author of Growing Flowers) has the perfect read for you: her book simplifies gardening and teaches you how to arrange flowers.

If you have a loved one or a friend with a green thumb, you might think about a gift to encourage their love for gardening.

Whether that person is a gardening expert or it’s their first time testing out their green thumb this year, giving them a gardening related gift will make their day.

On this list, you will find not only the best gardening tools you might choose as a gift, but we have also curated a list of gifts any gardener would love.

Gardening Basket

When it comes to selecting a gift for your plant-loving friend or loved one, a gardening basket is on the could really be on top of the list.

First of all, it’s practical. A gift basket is perfect for the person who loves plants and fresh produce, if he or she enjoys digging in the dirt or if they simply enjoy the nature.

You can either buy a gardening basket or create your own.

If you choose the DIY route, here are some tips on how to create one:

Mesh Garden Basket

What You’ll Need

  • 1×8 board cut to two 7.5×7.5” square pieces
  • 1×2 board cut to two 13” pieces
  • Steel screen or fencing measuring 15×13.5”
  • Bowl with 6 to 7” diameter
  • Rope for the handle

Tools You’ll Need

  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Router with straight bit
  • Wood clamp
  • Pneumatic nail gun or stapler with 1” nails and 1/2” samples
  • Cordless (or wired) drill with 1/2” drill bit

How To Do It

1. Using your tape measure, align the bowl to the two square pieces of wood (measuring 7.5×7.5”) so that it is centered on the board. With the pencil, trace around half of the bowl to mark the curvature of the basket wire.

2. Clamp the board down. With the narrowest straight bit you have, plunge the bit halfway and maneuver the router so that you can trim out along the U line of the board.

3. Cut the mesh to size (if it’s not measuring 15×13.5”). Using the staple gun, pin the steel screen in place to the U line you just cut. Make sure that the staple straddles the steel and the pins into the wood track.

4. The 13” boards are the extra support for the basket. Using the nail gun and the nails, staple it through the end boards.

5. Bore a hole with the 1/2” bit on each end of the basket then thread a rope to serve as its handle.

If creating your own gardening basket might take you a lot of time, you can also choose to buy a ready made one like this:
