Your latest release, Living the Faery Life, explores the magic and awe of the enchanted realm- how did you know that this wonderfully unique book had to be written? Where did your inspiration come from?
Brenda Knight asked me if I’d write a book about faeries for her. I’ve been trained by show business to always say “yes”, and figure out the details later. I am no stranger to the faery kingdom, being Irish and all, and having a grandmother who believed in them; I was not intimidated by the task, but hoped I could fulfill Brenda’s wishes. The first day I sat down to write the stories flowed like honey. I wrote the book in 5 weeks and the faeries helped me. I have an extensive faery garden, a stone circle, faery doors, and my backyard is filled with the plants and flowers that faeries like. As I wrote, the flowers grew taller, the blossoms bloomed brighter, and I felt the faeries were with me the entire time. Writing this book was a gift, all wrapped up with a huge purple bow. I loved every minute of it and I truly believe, the faeries wrote it; I just typed their words. They had certain things they wanted the world to know: fracture the myths and get to the heart of what a faery really is. People have already responded to the truths the book tells. If you read the book, you’ll have faeries all around you.
You are a widely celebrated author of an astonishing 26 books- what was your writing process like for this specific book? What did you find to be the most challenging as well as the most rewarding aspect of this process?
My usual process is to read and research everything on the subject, take extensive notes and gather information before I start writing. I like to know what others have said and written about a subject. This time, the book wrote itself from the heart of the faery kingdom. They wanted stories, the truth about who they really are and they chose me to tell it. It was a complete joy to write this book.
How did you first discover the Faery world? What was it about the realm that made you want to study and embody it?
I have always lived in the faery realm. Ever since I was a little girl, my Irish-Australian grandmother told me tales of faeries, adventures of the wee ones and charming tidbits about their lives. I never went for the Tinkerbelle types, or little flying beings with gossamer wings. My faeries were real, close by and helpful.
You have lived an incredible life obtaining three doctorates, becoming a licensed Religious Science Minister, working in the television industry for multiple decades and accomplishing so much more. How have all of these different paths led you to the enchanted realm and have you used what you have learned from the Faery world while navigating other paths in your life?
When you believe in something other than yourself, when you communicate beyond the veil and acknowledge beings in the other realms, energy flows into you and life works naturally. The times in my life when I forgot about the faeries, or thought I had done something by myself, I was in for a rude awakening. Communicating with a world beyond is a healthy way to conduct your life. Not that you give your power away to them, or ask them to do things for you, it’s more like cooperating with the unseen and trusting that it’s a good force and by following your instincts. I have learned that the Truth is most powerful when it comes by way of the other side.
Why do you believe that some people do not accept or acknowledge the Faery world? Do you believe it is possible to turn a non-believer into a fully-fledged Faery Believer?
I don’t believe in turning anyone in any direction. People will be attracted to those things that help them grow, learn and advance. Faeries are not the only things that help people. I personally don’t care if anyone believes in faeries or not. For some people believing in faeries conflicts with their religious beliefs. People should foster what aids them and makes them better people. Except for when they lose a tooth. Then, the only thing that matters is that they believe in the tooth faery, or then won’t get any cash. (Big smile).
If you had to choose your favorite passage or lesson from Living the Faery Life, what would it be?
I admit my favorite parts are twofold: One, the words by AnamCaraCat. She wrote, How to Be A Fairy and I liked it so much that I asked her if I could close my book with it. She generously agreed. The other part is the story about Helen Keller Squirrel faery. She was one of the most extraordinary and special beings I have ever met. Every time I read her story, I get goosebumps from the beautiful memories.
How do you want your readers to feel after they turn the last page of your book?
I want my readers to feel they have been on a beautiful journey. I hope they feel inspired to open their minds and hearts to the incredible faery world and that they make use of these spiritual beings of nature who have so much love and grace to offer us. It lights up your life so much when you welcome the faeries in. Joy abounds.
On a personal note, how are you nourishing your own soul and taking care of yourself during this chaotic time?
My self takes care of itself when I write, extend care for others and make myself available to those in need.
