When Gaston Calmette returned to the Paris offices of Le Figaro that evening in March 1914, an elegantly dressed woman was waiting to see him. Calmette was editor-in-chief of one of the most influential newspapers in France and his visitor, Henriette Caillaux, was the wife of France’s minister of finance.

For more than two months Joseph Caillaux had been the target of unrelenting attacks and exposés in the pages of Le Figaro. Henriette, determined to spare him from further disclosures and humiliation, pulled out a revolver and shot Calmette four times; he died within hours.

Henriette Caillaux’s crime passionnel shocked France and made headlines around the world. The shots fired in Le Figaro’s office that evening almost toppled the French government and would accomplish what Calmette’s published attacks could not – it would force Joseph Caillaux from office.

As the world hurtled ever closer to the war that was supposed to end all wars, France was fixated on l’affair Caillaux, not the looming threat of German invasion. And a question remained to be answered: would there be justice for Gaston Calmette?
